Sir Michael Bichard - Biography
Michael Bichard has worked throughout his career in the public sector 20 years in Local Government and nearly 10 in Central Government. He was Chief Executive of Brent and Gloucestershire Local Authorities and in 1990 became Chief Executive of the Governments Benefits Agency.
In 1995 he was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Employment Department and then the Department for Education and Employment. In May 2001 he left the Civil Service and in September 2001 was appointed Rector of The London Institute, now University of the Arts London, the largest university in Europe dedicated to art, design, fashion, communication and the performing arts.
Michael received a Knighthood in the Queens Birthday Honours 1999. He has Honorary Degrees from Leeds Metropolitan, Birmingham, Middlesex Universities and Southampton Institute. He is currently a member of: the Boards of the Industrial Society the River and Rowing Museum Foundation Reed Executive plc Windsor Leadership Trust Council Member of the Dyslexia Institute And a Fellow of: the Royal Society of the Arts the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development the Birmingham Institute of Local Government Studies.
He is also: Chairman and a Trustee of the CNAA Art Collection Trust Governor of the Henley College and Henley Management College a Member of the Board of Companions of the Institute of Management a Member of the Guild of Educators, and Chairman of Rathbone Training Limited.
Michael is married with three children and has supported Manchester United for more than 30 years.
